A Radial Series

I chose an image from this series for the header because of its simplicity. The aesthetic appeal that characterizes any radial composition is reinforced by layers of classic forms: interest has been created from otherwise plain shapes. The diminishing size of the layers creates depth as the forms shrink towards the topmost shape, whose pure color attracts the eye and reinforces the sense of space. To keep the pure white from dominating each image, the student has juxtaposed the bright color with the darker layers of the background. The resulting contrast creates balance and unifies the composition.

Rather than using gimmicky colors or shapes to create variety among the images, the student’s code relies on rotation, repetition, layering and scaling—processes that would have been tedious if done by hand. Thus the series demonstrates both an understanding of the image-processing capabilities of scripting and the principles of design.
